How to Save Mobile Data on Messaging Apps
Family groups can eat gigabytes of data a month. Control media auto-download, photo quality, video and call settings to cut messenger data use dramatically.
Busy groups full of forwarded videos are the biggest data drain on most phones. A few settings fix it.
1. Control auto-download
**Settings › Data & storage**: - **Auto-download photos** → Wi-Fi only (or on mobile if you have plenty of data). - **Auto-download videos** → Wi-Fi only or never.Media you didn't auto-download shows a preview; tap to download when you want it.
2. Send smaller photos
**Default photo quality → Data saver** when you're on a limited plan. You can still pick **HD** or **Original** for a specific send.3. Calls
Video calls use the most data. Use **voice calls** on mobile data, and share your screen instead of your camera if needed.4. Mute media-heavy groups
Muting doesn't stop downloads by itself, but it stops you opening every forwarded video out of curiosity — combined with auto-download off, it saves a lot.5. Watch Discover and stories on Wi-Fi
Public feeds with photos and videos can use a lot of data; browse them on Wi-Fi.6. Check Android's data saver
Android's **Data Saver** limits background data for apps. If you rely on background notifications, allow Yapie unrestricted data so messages still arrive.Quick data cheat-sheet
