How to Export a Chat (HTML or JSON) and Back Up Your Whole Account

Sometimes you need a copy of a conversation outside the app — for business records, a dispute, a legal matter or simply memories.

#Export one chat

1. Open the chat. 2. Tap **⋮ (More) › Export chat**. 3. Choose a format: - **HTML** — a readable page with names, dates and messages. Open it in any browser and print or save as PDF. - **JSON** — structured data for spreadsheets, archives or other tools.

On Android the file is saved to Downloads/YAP; in a browser it downloads normally.

#Back up your whole account

1. Open **Settings › Backup, import & export**. 2. Tap **Back up now**.

You get a compressed .yapbackup file containing your profile, settings, contacts, every chat you're in, Moments and posts. Turn on Automatic backup (daily, weekly or monthly) to have it made for you.

Restore from file brings settings and contacts back into any account — handy if you set up a fresh account.

#Secret chats

Secret chats are end-to-end encrypted and live on your devices. Exports include them in encrypted form; the readable content stays on devices with the keys.

#Keeping exports safe

Exports contain private conversations. Store them somewhere secure, and delete copies you no longer need.

#Server-side protection

Separately from your own exports, Yapie keeps a [recovery vault](/blog/server-recovery-vault-explained) so chats can be restored even if you lose every copy.

How do I save a chat as a PDF?

Export the chat as HTML, open it in your browser and use Print › Save as PDF.

Does the account backup include media?

It includes references to your files, which stay downloadable from your server. Export individual chats or download files you want to keep offline.

Can I schedule backups?

Yes. In Settings › Backup, import & export, set Automatic backup to daily, weekly or monthly.
