Taming Big Groups: Slow Mode, Topics and Admin Tips
Large groups turn chaotic fast. Use slow mode, topics, pinned rules and media permissions to keep a 500-person group readable and friendly.
A group with 20 friends runs itself. A group with 500 members needs structure.
1. Slow mode
Slow mode limits how often each member can send a message — for example once every 30 seconds or 5 minutes. It stops floods during live events and heated debates, and nudges people to write one thoughtful message instead of ten short ones.Set it: group info › Admin › Slow mode.
2. Topics
Topics split one big group into threads such as *Announcements*, *Questions*, *Buy & sell* and *Off-topic*. Members pick the topic they care about, and the main view stays readable.3. Media and link permissions
Forwarded videos and memes drown real conversation. Set **Who can send media** to admins during busy periods, or permanently in announcement-style groups.4. Pinned rules
Write short, clear rules and **pin** them: - Stay on topic. - No selling outside the Buy & sell topic. - No forwarded chain messages. - Be respectful.5. Approve new members
For private communities, switch on **Approve new members** and ask a question in the join request.6. Delegate
Promote a few trusted members to admin. Give admins clear guidance so moderation is consistent.7. Move announcements to a channel
If most messages are announcements, create a **channel** and keep the group for discussion. See [creating and growing a channel](/blog/create-channel-and-grow-audience).Frequently asked questions
