How to Create a Strong Password You'll Actually Remember

Length beats complexity. A practical guide to passphrases, password managers, avoiding reuse, and why two-step verification matters even with a great password.

By · · 1 min read

Most account takeovers aren't clever hacks — they're reused or guessable passwords.

Length beats complexity

`P@ssw0rd1!` looks complex but is in every cracking list. `river-candle-pocket-orbit` is longer, easier to remember and far harder to guess.

Make a passphrase

1. Pick **four or more random words** (not a famous quote or song lyric). 2. Join them with dashes or spaces. 3. Optionally add a number or capital.

Never reuse passwords

When one website is breached, attackers try the same email and password everywhere ("credential stuffing"). A unique password per account contains the damage.

Use a password manager

Bitwarden, 1Password, the Google or Apple password manager — they generate and remember unique passwords so you only memorise one strong master passphrase.

Turn on two-step verification

Even a perfect password can be phished. [Two-step verification](/blog/two-step-verification-guide) means a stolen password isn't enough.

How Yapie protects your password

- Minimum **8 characters**. - Stored only as a salted **Argon2** hash — designed to be slow to crack. - **Rate limiting** on sign-in attempts, per account and per network. - **New-login alerts** in Saved Messages.

Signs you should change it now

- You used it on another site that was breached. - You typed it into a page you reached from a chat link. - You see a login you don't recognise in Settings › Devices.

Frequently asked questions

What makes a password strong?

Length and unpredictability. A passphrase of four or more random words is strong and memorable.

Should I change my password regularly?

Change it when there's a reason — a breach, phishing or suspicious login. A unique strong password plus 2FA matters more than frequent changes.

How does Yapie store my password?

As a salted Argon2 hash, never as plain text.
