Message Notifications Not Working on Android? 9 Fixes

Messages only show up when you open the app? Step-by-step fixes for delayed or missing chat notifications on Android — permissions, battery optimisation, data saver, Do Not Disturb and more.

You open the app and ten messages appear that never notified you. On Android this is almost always a phone setting, not a broken app. Work through these fixes in order.

1. Allow notifications

On Android 13 and newer, apps must ask permission. Go to **Settings › Apps › [app] › Notifications** and switch them on. In Yapie you can also check **Settings › Notifications & sounds**.

2. Turn off battery optimisation for the app

This is the number-one cause. Android (and especially Xiaomi, Oppo, Vivo, Realme, Huawei and Samsung skins) pauses background apps to save power.
  • Go to Settings › Apps › [app] › Battery and choose Unrestricted (or "Don't optimise").
  • In Yapie: Settings › Notifications & sounds › Reliable delivery › Allow.

See brand-by-brand battery settings.

3. Allow background data

**Settings › Apps › [app] › Mobile data** → allow background data. Also check that **Data Saver** isn't restricting the app.

4. Check Do Not Disturb and Focus modes

DND, Bedtime and Focus modes silence notifications. Add the app as an exception.

5. Check notification channels

Android lets apps split notifications into channels (Messages, Calls…). If one was turned off or set to silent, that type won't alert you. Open the app's notification settings and make sure **Messages** and **Calls** are on with sound.

6. Check the chat isn't muted

Muted chats and groups don't notify. In Yapie, muted chats show a bell-off icon.

7. Enable auto-start (some brands)

Xiaomi, Oppo, Vivo and others have an **Autostart** list. Allow the app so it can restart after a reboot.

8. Lock the app in Recents

Some phones close apps swiped from Recents. Lock the app (padlock icon in the Recents view).

9. Update the app and Android

Old versions can have notification bugs.

How Yapie delivers notifications

Yapie's Android app keeps its own lightweight background connection — like the privacy-focused builds of Signal and Telegram — so messages and calls arrive even without Google Play services. You'll see a quiet "Yapie is connected" notification; you can hide it under Android Settings › Apps › Yapie › Notifications › Background connection without affecting message alerts.

Frequently asked questions

Why do I only get notifications when I open the app?

Your phone is pausing the app in the background. Turn off battery optimisation for it and allow background data.

Does Yapie need Google Play services for notifications?

No. Yapie's Android app keeps its own background connection, so notifications work without Google services.

What is the "Yapie is connected" notification?

It keeps background delivery running reliably. You can hide that notification category in Android settings; message notifications keep working.
