Signal vs Telegram vs WhatsApp vs Yapie: Privacy Compared
Which messenger is most private? A plain-English comparison of encryption, data collection, cloud storage, recovery and account protection across Signal, Telegram, WhatsApp and Yapie.
"Private" means different things. Here we compare four messengers on the questions that actually matter.
1. Who can read your messages?
- Signal: only you and the recipient — every chat is end-to-end encrypted.
- WhatsApp: only you and the recipient — end-to-end encrypted by default.
- Telegram: regular "cloud chats" are encrypted in transit and stored on Telegram's servers; secret chats are end-to-end encrypted.
- Yapie: regular chats are stored on Yapie's servers so they sync and can be recovered; secret chats are end-to-end encrypted and stay on your devices.
2. What happens if you lose your phone?
- Signal: history is gone unless you transferred it to a new phone.
- WhatsApp: you need a working Google Drive/iCloud backup.
- Telegram: cloud chats are there when you sign in.
- Yapie: regular chats are there when you sign in, and a recovery vault can restore even deleted chats.
Privacy and recoverability pull in opposite directions. The more a service can recover for you, the more it stores.
3. Metadata
Metadata — who you talk to, when, from where — can reveal a lot. Signal is designed to collect almost none. WhatsApp shares some account and usage data within Meta. Telegram and Yapie store what's needed to sync chats across devices.
4. Contact discovery
Signal and Yapie use privacy-preserving approaches; Yapie turns phone numbers and emails into one-way hashes on your device before matching.
5. Account protection
| Signal | Telegram | Yapie | ||
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Extra login protection | Registration PIN | Two-step PIN | Cloud password | Authenticator-app 2FA |

| Manage sessions | Linked devices | Linked devices | ✅ | ✅ |
6. Ephemeral messages
All four support disappearing messages. In Yapie, disappearing and view-once messages are never copied into the recovery vault.
Which should you use?
- Highest privacy: Signal, or secret chats in Yapie/Telegram.
- Everyday messaging where losing history is the bigger risk: Yapie or Telegram cloud chats with two-step verification turned on.
